Logistics

berlin has two international airports. once in town, you do not need a car. the public transportation system is great and cabs are everywhere.

Please note that most taxis still do not take cards, so have some cash with you when taking one.

  • Pro tip 1: If you are going less than two kilometers (1.2 miles), ask for a "Kurzstrecke". The fare for this so-called regulation short distance is only €4.00.
  • Pro tip 2: Even through Uber does not offer its car service in Berlin, you can use the app to order a taxi to any address (the Kurzstrecke won't work though).

Where to Stay

Where to Stay

Accommodations

There are plenty of hotels and Airbnb's in Berlin. We recommend staying in Kreuzberg or Mitte for easy access to everything.

Generally, we think that AirBnB is the best option and has many local rentals available in different price ranges (If this is your first time using AirBnB click on this link to get $25 off).

If you'd prefer a hotel, here are some recommendations:

  • The Dude Hotel - small, reasonably priced design hotel on the same street as the party on Saturday.
  • The Mandala Suites - reasonably priced, close to tons of tourist attractions and a short cab or subway trip to weekend events.
  • Hotel de Rome - for folks looking to splurge, regularly rated among the top hotels in Berlin, historic and central location.
  • Cosmo Hotel - modern hotel with great reviews, located roughly half way between downtown tourist attractions and weekend events.
  • ARCOTEL John F Berlin - centrally located, reasonably priced, new rooms, gets great reviews.
  • Hotel Adlon Kempinski - where Michael Jackson held his baby over the balcony for the Paparazzi. Right across from the Brandenburg Gate, definitely the high end of luxury options.

Gifts

We know that many of you are traveling extremely long distances to celebrate with us and that is the coolest gift we can imagine.

We absolutely do not expect anything further, but since some folks have asked, we have put together a few ideas:

  • A dear friend of ours, Becca Heller, did all of our green card paperwork for free, but in her real job, she runs a non-profit organization that secures refugee status for folks whose lives are in danger and whose immigration situation is not as easy as ours. We'd be touched if friends wanted to make a donation in honor of our wedding to The Iraqi Refugee Assistance Project. You can donate here.
  • An organization that we have both supported over our years in Boston is Soccer Without Borders, which runs soccer programs and provides educational and community support for local immigrant youth. Basti is a volunteer coach and we have been repeatedly impressed by the impact of this great organization. You can donate here.
  • We have also heard that many people like to give a gift for the home, so we have a registry at West Elm, where we have noted a few items we could use in our apartment. You can search for either of our names on the website or use the link here.
